Pompeii rebels against Rome

Pompeii

Listen to this guide

Yet Pompeii and other allies eventually rebelled against Rome.

They were frustrated that - despite paying Roman taxes and supporting military campaigns - they were not granted Roman citizenship and were not considered Roman.

This "War of the Allies" lasted 3 years.

Sulla, a Roman general, besieged Pompeii and bombarded the city.

Impacts from this attack are still visible on these walls.

Ultimately, Rome won the war, and Pompeii was fully integrated into the Roman Empire.

Latin became the official language, people adopted Latin names, and new buildings, like the amphitheatre, were constructed.

Pompeii grew increasingly prosperous and became the leading destination for top entertainment in the region.
